Synopsis
Powhatan tribal people stare in wonder as three ships approach shore. It’s a story every schoolchild knows: the story of Capt. John Smith (Colin Farrell) and Pocahontas (Q’orianka Kilcher). Now, as told by filmmaker Terrence Malick (Badlands, Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line) in this extended version with more than 30 minutes of footage unseen in theaters — it’s a story you never imagined. Working in part from first-hand histories and adding his extraordinary sense of image and human drama, Malick crafts a visceral, spellbinding tale of the Jamestown settlement, of cultures connecting and of deadly consequences when connections fray. Christian Bale and Christopher Plummer also star.
Special Features
- A comprehensive, ten-part documentary Making the New World capturing the unique challenges of creating this historic epic.
Firefox 3
Okay,
this comes a day late, but Firefox 3 is now out. And so far, it’s racked up almost 8 millions downloads since it’s launch yesterday. This number also gives it a world record, although there was no previous record to beat. Still, a good marketing ploy.

Harbinger of Doom
It’s June 9 and Summer is just a few weeks away. It’s currently 3:05pm in Vancouver.
And it’s snowing.
Ouch, the City of Anal Torture

Tori Amos Goes Independent
After 22 years of being in the shackles of the major label system, Tori has chosen the path of independence for her next work. As with many of her contemporaries Tori is devising new and exciting ways of getting her music to the masses without the boundaries and limitations of the major music companies.

My thoughts: This is not an unexpected move. Her deal with Epic was up. She had already been testing out the waters with official bootlegs from this last tour. Even though they were put out by Epic, the method was soley through the Internet. She’s already moved onto doing a musical in the UK. At the same time, she’s aware she has a fan base willing to go along with her, and has been acquiring new fans as her music has changed focus, but not intensity, in the past 5 years.
I wouldn’t be surprised if she puts out a tour DVD in the next year, along with an online component to go with her musical. While not every fan can make it to the UK to see what will most likely be a limited run play, she can capitalize on online content music sales. And knowing her, she probably will still create, putting out an album, or something resembling it, in the next two years.
Also, this summer, a comic anthology based off her songs hits the shelves. Check out artwork and the song listing.
Isn’t it supposed to rain outdoors, not indoors?
So I come into work. The fire alarm is going off. There is water coming down from inside the wiring closet next to the elevator and where our office door is near, a funky smell in the elevator, nobody in the office,
doors have been stuff with blankets, and everything is turned off, but people are coming and going through the rest of the building and a janitor mopping up water lets me by into the office without saying anything …..
So I stayed, cautiously, waiting. After 1/2 hour, some guys showed back up and one of them said he had heard drilling earlier, then heard water falling. Someone had drilled into the main water line for the sprinkler system. The water was pouring out into the wiring closet and over the circuit breaker. So they shut off the computers and all left for lunch.
Power is still on in the building and the sound of water falling has finally stopped. Now it’s just a guy out there with a mop.
Just another day at 402 W Pender.
Kathleen Edwards
Went to go see her last night with my brother, who bought us both tickets. The opening act, some guy named Justin Rutledge, was terrible. He had a really good voice and was good on guitar, but his songs all sounded the same and as soon as he said his last album was about his relationship to the church, I needed another drink just to get through his last song. But all was redeemed when Kathleen Edwards hit the stage. She kicked some serious ass. One of my favorite songs, Run, ended with her showing her guitar who’s boss. Amazing stuff. Seeing her live also put some of the songs into perspective as I could see the type of emotion she was putting into them.
The best part was meeting her after the show and having her sign a couple of her limited edition, handmade radio tube fridge magnets that my brother bought. She was making more them on the bus on the way to Vancouver yesterday.
Here’s the video for the latest single, which she sang last night.
